The England vs South Africa ODI series began with a dominant victory for South Africa at Headingley. Most of the attention, however, was on debutant Sonny Baker. This was a rough start, as the 22-year-old fast bowler gave up 76 runs in seven overs with no wickets, the costly spell by an England bowler in an ODI debut.
Baker’s day had started brightly when Jos Buttler presented him with his England cap in front of family and teammates. However, after England were bowled out for just 131, the youngster found himself under immediate pressure with little to defend. Aiden Markram did not take long to attack him, and in 23 balls, he was on his way to a half-century.
Despite the heavy defeat, England captain Harry Brook stood by his debutant bowler. He made it clear the team would back him fully. “Everybody will get behind him. We are such a tight-knit group. He kept running in, kept trying for wickets even after taking some tap, and that’s exactly the fight we ask of our bowlers,” Brook said at the presentation.
Brook also admitted that with the game effectively out of reach inside the power play, England used the remainder of the match to give players like Baker more exposure in match conditions. The youngster even produced a tidy over in his second spell before Markram and Ryan Rickelton pressed on.
Markram later praised Baker’s potential, saying if the seamer finds his rhythm, he will be “a really good bowler.” For now, England’s focus will be on ensuring Baker’s confidence is not shaken. With Lord’s hosting the second ODI, the team will hope their new fast bowler turns a tough start into valuable experience.
