South Africa batted thrillingly at Lord's and scored 330/8 in the 2nd ODI. Regularity, alliances, and personal genius characterised their performance and got the scoreboard rolling and the spectators amused.

The opener Aiden Markram started it off with a reliable 49 and missed his half-century by just one. Ryan Rickelton (partner) contributed 35 and gave the visitors a good start. Captain Temba Bavuma contributed a little (4), but before long, attention had been drawn to Matthew Breetzke, who had 85 out in 77 balls, with strokes and boundaries and ingenious turn-taking.

The show by Tristan Stubbs, who showed his capabilities through a fluent 58 off 62 deliveries to give the team some lifeline in the mid overs, also boosted the momentum. His 100-run partnership with Breetzke resulted in the innings swinging them in South Africa.

Dewald Brevis later warmed the stage with a bang of 42 off 20 balls, hitting at well over 200, followed by Corbin Bosch to finish the job, who remained unbeaten on 32 off 29 balls. The lower order contributed and helped South Africa to hit the 300 mark with ease.

England had found openings on the bowling side principally in Jofra Archer, who took four wickets with great rapidity and inventive change. But the depth of South African batting enabled them to continue their push even as their wickets fell in between.

The visitors were not in a hurry; they scored 51 during the first power play, then consolidated with regular run-scoring, and finished with a bang in the last 10. By the end of 50 overs, they had amassed an astronomically large aggregate of 331, and England was now in the underpressure not to lose the match.

The mix of calculated innings and aggressive stroke play has positioned South Africa to offer an exciting chase under the lights at Lord's.
